CHANGING COURSE OPTIONS PLENTY

CHANGING COURSE;

Options Aplenty

Students today have familiarised themselves with the buzzwords of the world outside and this is reflecting in the choices they are making while opting for their courses

Mahesh Gaurav was elated after scoring beyond his expectations in his class 12 exams. But more than the score, he is relieved that he is doing with it finally. "It has not been easy time and I am glad it is over. Now I am looking forward to the JEE and am thing of the courses I can apply for this year," says Mahesh.

MORE CHOICES

Even as the popularity of engineering continues to remain unabated, there are many other courses being sought out by students, predominantly in the field of commerce. "Engineering and medicine remain top priority, though I feel the craze that once existed has come down. Students planning for engineering and medicine are currently waiting for JEE and NEET to happen. But at the same time, students are open to more courses today," says Poon am Gaglani, director of an institute, as she elaborates on this.

"Today, students are also looking for law, business, finance and economics. In fact, I see many students even from the science steam opt for finance and business subjects for their undergraduation. The entire arena of career has widened. The students have more options. You can even see science students preparing for CA foundation. But then, there is one section that is single-mindedly focused on engineering," she says.

NEWER OPTIONS

Not many years back, one felt there was a saturation in the field of IT but that seems to have changed again. Even those who are not very familiar with the IT industry are familiar with terms like artificial intelligence (AI) and IIT.  Needless to say, the IT sector is an area where students are showing a lot of interest. Colleges are also taking measures to ensure their curriculum is in tune with the requirements of the industry. "Data sciences and AI have garnered a lot of interest among the students. The colleges are signing MoUs with the  industry to get their faculty trained in the courses that are the need of the hour. Recent reports suggest that companies will continue hiring fresh candidates, even though they might be working from home. Many students feel there is a lot of promise in the field of IT," says RM Kishore, vice chairman, of an engineering college. "In fact, we also saw online placement happen in campus," he says.

Poon am feels that while section continues you believe that there is some saturation with respect to IT, industry trends suggest something else.  "AI is picking up and many students have their eyes set on it; they see it as the future. Even kids are familiar with what is happening around us. As for other branches, mechanical is always popular since it, is a core subject of engineering. It is here to stay."
